Abstract:

Common sense dictates that we should store food at refrigerators to keep it fresh because bacteria growth is suppressed at low temperatures. But why? And, why bacteria continue to grow, though slowly, at refrigerator temperatures? This talk will present an understanding based on molecular transport rate measured as a function of temperature through individual membranes in the bacterial wall.

The measurements are only possible due to a newly developed technique based on the nonlinear optical phenomenon – Second Harmonic Generation. The physics of Second Harmonic Light Scattering (SHS) from the surface of colloidal objects including nanoparticles and biological cells will be discussed.

Using this SHS method, which enables observation of molecular adsorption and transport at living cell membranes with time- and spatial resolution, many important questions in molecular and cell biology related to molecule-membrane interactions can be studied: Fundamental questions like “How does membrane or molecular structure affect the transport rate?” And real-life questions like “How does the Gram-differentiation of bacteria work?” and “How do bacteria develop antibiotic resistance?”
