讲座主题/Title：On the expansion property of finite simple groups

讲座摘要/Abstract: This is an expository talk on the expansion property of finite (non-abelian) simple groups. Roughly speaking, given a finite (non-abelian) simple group and a set of generators, the diameter measures how fast the generators can generate the whole group. We say a finite simple group (together with a set of generators) has the expansion property, if the diameter is minimal in a certain sense. It is conjectured that any finite (non-abelian) simple group of bounded rank (together with a set of generators) has the expansion property. Although this conjecture seems to be out of reach currently, exciting progress has been made in the past 15 years. In this talk, we will try to have a quick review of the recent developments in this area and their interesting applications to number theory.
