主讲人简介/Biography:
Wei Hong is currently Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), and Fellow of ASME. Wei got both B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tsinghua University, and Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University in 2006. Wei worked in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2014. He held joint appointment from Hokkaido University since 2015 and was appointed as Associate Professor and later as Professor. He joined SUSTech in 2018. Wei’s research covers areas including solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, microstructure evolution, Multiphysics modeling, and recently focuses on polymer physics, dielectric breakdown, adhesion, active materials and smart structures, and surface instabilities.
讲座摘要/Abstract:
Composed mostly of solvent (water) molecules and a loosely crosslinked polymer network, a polymeric gel appears and feels like a liquid solution. It is natural to ask the question: Are the mechanical properties of a liquid-like gel fully determined by its chemical composition (monomer, solvent, crosslinkers, etc.), or would the synthesis condition and process affect its network structure and further the macroscopic properties? Through carefully planned experiments, we systematically studied the mechanical properties of a set of compositionally identical hydrogels prepared through different processes. Strong dependences of the mechanical properties on the synthesis conditions were identified, and the results were well captured by a set of scaling laws derived from the theory of semi-dilute solutions, in conjunction with proposed network topologies and structural evolution. We further studied the fracture of these chemically identical gels, and found some intriguing relations between the fracture energies and the synthesis processes. These findings are helpful to the understanding of the process-property relations of polymeric materials, and to the design and synthesis of hydrogels of extraordinary performance.
