主讲人简介/Biography:
Dr. Guoqiang Shen is an endowed full professor at Zhejiang University. He was on faculty at the University of Texas (UTA), the University of Oklahoma, East Carolina University, and Beijing University of Architecture, in areas of Architecture, Urban Planning, Public Affairs, Engineering, and Management. Dr. Shen has broad research interests and creative activities in urban transportation planning (especially freight transportation and logistics), urban form and structure, spatial analysis/GIS, applied operations research, regional science, risk analysis, eco-system services and landscape planning, urban design and physical planning, real estate development, and comparative international urban and planning issues (particularly in the U.S. and China).
As a scholar and practitioner, Dr. Shen is synthesizing his creative activities into scholarly publications in urban design and planning. His research efforts for the next five to ten years will be broadly on sustainable, healthy, safe, and smart cities from social-economic-physical perspectives. Dr. Shen has published 100+ peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, book chapters, and reports. Dr. Shen's scholarly research is funded through multiple grants totaling about $25.0 million through collaborations with groups of engineering and social sciences faculty in the U.S. and China. He supervised over 20 funded research reports, mostly for governmental organizations.
Dr. Shen's professional practice is largely realized through his creative activities in urban physical design and planning projects in China. Over the past 10 years, he has participated in over 30 international, national, local competition or privately-sponsored projects ranging from small-scale architecture and landscape architecture design projects to large-scale urban planning projects. These projects were largely done through his partnership with local planning and design firms/institutes or his own firms, such as the Coast-Coast Direct, LLC in US, which provided transportation and logistics consultancy and LEAP, which was an architecture design and urban planning firm in China jointly with Greentown Development in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Quite a few of Dr. Shen's planning and design projects won national or international competitions.
讲座摘要/Abstract:
Dr. Shen's talk is going to cover some of his past works:
(1) invented an algebraic method to linearizing the NP-hard 0-1 quadratic term in optimization and successfully applied to the quadratic formulation of the hub-spoke network design problem; (2) developed a cutting edge global-local multi-commodity, multi-network, and scalable freight flow model, which can be implemented to local industry locations, global trade, and international issues; (3) conceptualized the U-buy and U-ship system platform linking local retail stores to e-commerce based on the sharing economy concept; (4) built a good urban risk index considering single or multi-hazards for any city or place in the world; (5) invented the SkyVilla new housing system combining features of single-family villas with high-rise apartments, helping increase land use efficiency, reduce housing cost, curb urban sprawl, and (6) integrated a smart sun-light system which can bring natural sun lights to any interior space of any residential, commercial, or industrial building. This system calls for revisions to the planning and design codes required for building orientation and sun light access in China or any part of the world.
